The Royal Pavilion, Brighton, was constructed as the seaside pleasure palace of King George IV. The King's apartments were moved to the ground floor during John Nash's transformation of the residence, designed with comfort in mind. There are familiar international influences - Indian, Chinese, French - and some wonderful pieces of Regency furniture. The walls are covered with a hand-painted copy of decorator Robert Jones' original printed wallpaper. This was one of the King's favourite designs, featuring dragons, birds and flowers in an intricate pattern.

THE ARTIST. Pieter van den Keere (1571-c. 1646) was a Flemish engraver, publisher and globe maker who came to England as a Protestant refugee. Settling in Amsterdam in 1593, he continued to work and began engraving a series of miniature county maps for the British Isles Atlas in 1599. His works also include a map of Ireland, urban panoramas of Utrecht, Cologne, Amsterdam and Paris, as well as a collection of world maps. THE FINAL WORD. Combining high-quality production with magnificent fine art, the covers are printed on foil in five colours, embossed then foil stamped. This example is based on 'Wheat Field with Cypresses' by Vincent van Gogh. Vincent Van Gogh composed this painting while he was in the Saint-Rémy mental asylum, near Arles. The bold use of impasto and the beauty of the towering trees have made this one of his most recognisable works. There are various other versions of the painting, one of which features a closer view of the cypresses painted vertically, as well as a replica of this version that Van Gogh painted for his mother and sister.

THE ARTIST. William Kilburn (1745-1818) was a highly regarded designer of block-printed cottons in the 18th century. Born in Dublin, he was apprenticed to a cotton and linen printer at Lucan. He moved to London and sold designs to printers, and drawings and engravings to print shops. THE FINAL WORD.
