Alhambra's world-famous palace in Granada, Spain, was first built in AD 889 as a small fortress. Throughout the centuries it has been rebuilt and extended into an enormous complex fit for royalty, richly decorated with mosaics and tiles, with a mixture of both Islamic and Christian influences.

Although this subject was explored by Claude Monet (1840-1926) and Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), stylistically it is extremely different from Impressionism. THE ARTIST. John James Audubon (born Jean-Jacques Rabin) was an ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. His major work, The Birds of America, published between 1827 and 1839, was an extensive study documenting all types of American birds in their natural habitats. The Royal Pavilion, Brighton, was constructed as the seaside pleasure palace of King George IV. The King's apartments were moved to the ground floor during John Nash's transformation of the residence, designed with comfort in mind. There are familiar international influences - Indian, Chinese, French - and some wonderful pieces of Regency furniture. The walls are covered with a hand-painted copy of decorator Robert Jones' original printed wallpaper. This was one of the King's favourite designs, featuring dragons, birds and flowers in an intricate pattern.

THE ARTIST. Pieter van den Keere (1571-c. 1646) was a Flemish engraver, publisher and globe maker who came to England as a Protestant refugee. Settling in Amsterdam in 1593, he continued to work and began engraving a series of miniature county maps for the British Isles Atlas in 1599. His works also include a map of Ireland, urban panoramas of Utrecht, Cologne, Amsterdam and Paris, as well as a collection of world maps. THE FINAL WORD.
